TRANSMISSIONS PRESENTS: Love Is the Devil

March 20 @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm GMT

Continuing our March season of bold, explicit, and uncompromising queer cinema, Queer As In Fuck U, we’re proud to present underrated masterpiece Love Is the Devil: Study For A Portrait of Francis Bacon (1998).

Director John Maybury – who first rose to prominence helming music videos for Sinead O’Connor and Pet Shop Boys, as well as collaborating with Derek Jarman – crafts not only a rigorous snapshot of a period in iconic contemporary artist Francis Bacon‘s life, but a vividly immersive journey into the dark heart of the work itself.

Love Is the Devil seems to live within Bacon’s brutal paintings, depicting a cutthroat world of cruel figures and emotional depravity as it depicts the fraught relationship between Bacon (Derek Jacobi) and his troubled lover George Dyer (Daniel Craig), conjuring the gay pub culture of 1960s London, and letting viewers float down a river of gruel and into Bacon’s consciousness.

Come for a hunky young Daniel Craig and unforgettable cinematography by John Mathieson (Gladiator, Logan, Hannibal), stay for a devilish supporting turn by Tilda Swinton and polari insults delivered a mile a minute.

We’ll be cosy in the bowels of Dalston Superstore, ready for another night at the movies designed for our beloved trans audience.
