RUNT, ‘The (ESE-)Asian Invasion’!

February 15 @ 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm GMT

Join us for the February edition of RUNT, ‘The (ESE-)Asian Invasion’!

Curated by curator and arts producer Katrina Man, the night will be a joyful yet critically-engaged celebration of East and Southeast Asian (ESEA) performance and visual artists’ work in the UK.

Expect an array of experimental and playful performances, witty films, comedy, participatory and visual artworks, and a DJ set to finish the night, all by fantastically talented ESEA creatives!

‘The (ESE-)Asian Invasion’ is a tongue-in-cheek, critically-engaged comment on how “Asians”, especially East and Southeast Asian people, and the political/geographical powers associated with them, are perceived to be everywhere and “taking over the world”.* Yet, ironically, whilst ESEA people and powers may have an increasing presence, the nuanced and pluralistic lived experiences, voices and multi-faceted talents of individuals and groups within these communities is still sorely under-acknowledged, under-valued and under-represented in UK culture and society at large.

This is a timely issue now more than ever due to the rise in ESEA hate and racism witnessed during the pandemic, the repercussions of which are still being grappled with today.

*This title is inspired by a friend telling me (Katrina) how when their white friend’s white mother visited a university in London she disparagingly exclaimed “oh my, it’s like the Asian invasion!” due to the large number of ESEA-looking students she observed.
