LGBTIQA+ Inclusion in Sex Education in Secondary Schools

Pride in Education has teamed up with the LGBT Foundation with the support of Pearson to offer this free 60-minute workshop is to equip secondary school educators with the knowledge and tools to deliver inclusive sex and relationships education (SRE). 

This session will reflects the experiences and needs of LGBTIQA+ students,  and focus on integrating LGBTIQA+ topics into the curriculum, understanding the current UK context, and fulfilling educators’ duty of care towards all students.

Workshop Objectives:

  1. Raise Awareness of LGBTIQA+ Identities: Ensure participants understand the full spectrum of sexual orientations and gender identities, and the importance of using inclusive language in sex education.
  2. Promote Inclusivity in SRE: Guide participants on embedding LGBTIQA+ topics into the curriculum, ensuring lessons are relevant to all students and reflect diverse relationships and experiences.
  3. Understand the Current UK Context: Provide an overview of the legal and social context in the UK, including relevant legislation such as the Equality Act 2010, and how it influences the delivery of LGBTIQA+ inclusive education.
  4. Duty of Care: Clarify educators’ legal and ethical responsibilities to safeguard and support LGBTIQA+ students, ensuring that all students have access to safe, inclusive, and comprehensive SRE.
  5. Address Stigma and Discrimination: Provide strategies to challenge stigma, stereotypes, and misconceptions about LGBTIQA+ individuals within the context of sex education.
  6. Enhance Confidence in Teaching LGBTIQA+ Content: Build educators’ confidence in delivering LGBTIQA+ inclusive content and handling sensitive or challenging questions from students.
  7. Provide Resources and Guidance: Equip participants with resources, teaching materials, and external support networks to enhance their delivery of inclusive sex education.

Workshop Outcomes:

By the end of the workshop, participants will:

  1. Have a clear understanding of LGBTIQA+ identities and the importance of addressing the needs of LGBTIQA+ students within sex education.
  2. Feel confident in integrating LGBTIQA+ topics into sex and relationships education, ensuring lessons are inclusive and relevant to all students.
  3. Be aware of the current UK legal and social context and understand how legislation like the Equality Act 2010 informs their duty of care to LGBTIQA+ students.
  4. Understand their duty of care to provide a safe, inclusive learning environment and to support the well-being of LGBTIQA+ students in line with UK law.
  5. Be prepared to challenge stigma and discrimination related to LGBTIQA+ issues in the classroom, promoting a safe and supportive learning environment.
  6. Gain practical strategies for delivering sensitive content and responding to student questions about LGBTIQA+ topics with confidence and sensitivity.
  7. Leave with a list of resources and support services to continue their professional development and improve the inclusivity of their teaching practices.

This workshop gives educators a thorough understanding of the UK context and their duty of care, while also offering practical strategies for making sex education more inclusive for LGBTIQA+ students.
