Communal Clay X The Grove Gardens; Coil & Hakeme Clay Workshop

July 21 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm BST

Communal Clay No.27 @ The DIY Skatepark & The Grove Community Garden

COILING AND HAKEME / 刷毛目 WORKSHOP

Profits from this workshop are being split between The Grove Community Garden & Communal Clay CIC, this will enable the garden to continue to grow and support itself, and for Communal Clay to run free and low cost workshops for communities.

Using clay we will introduce you to the coiling technique frequently used in hand building sculptures and tableware. Coiling is an amazing technique with endless possibilities. After making your coiled work we will then introduce ‘Hakeme’.

Hakeme or 刷毛目 translates as ‘brush strokes’ using plant and organic matter from the garden we will all create our own brushes to then use to create interesting and beautiful Hakeme on our coiled works.

You will be able to add colour and depth to your work with wild clay slips we have collected from around South London.

The session will last 2 hours.

Theses workshops will be more focused on the tactility of playing, practicing and learning  sculpture techniques.

At the end of the workshop if you wish to have your piece fired and glazed, we ask you pay an additional £10 to cover firing costs, glaze materials & transport of your work. **

All clay at the end of the session will be recycled for future use, minimising wastage and keeping our workshops sustainable.
