Uncanny Waters Call For Participants

Heads Bodies Legs Is Inviting 12 Intergenerational Participants (Aged Under 30 Or 50+) 

To Join Uncanny Waters.

Uncanny Waters Is A Series Of Costuming Workshops Which Explores The Symbolism Of Water And Transformation On Identity And Queer Heritage.

 

About The Project:  Through A Series Of Structured Workshops, Running From November To April, 12 Participants Will Design And Create Costumes Inspired By The Eerie Undercurrents Of History And Folklore That Bind Our Identities To Place And Time.

 

Led By Lu Firth And Ray Malone From Heads Bodies Legs, Uncanny Waters Will Explore How Bodies Of Water, Sites Of Trade And Exploitation, Also Carry Stories Of Resistance And Survival; From The Monstrous Myth Of The Deptford Necker And Queer Pirates To Personal Stories Of Migration, Border Crossing, And Transformation. 

 

What We Will Explore:

  • Personal Journeys: Stories Of Migration, Displacement, And Identity Forged Through Connection With Our Cultural And Personal Histories.
  • Myth And Mystery: Unearthing The Eerie And Uncanny Tales Tied To London’s Rivers, Blending The Real With The Mythic In Our Understanding Of Queer Pasts.
  • Queer Heritage: From Queer Pirates To Our Own Personal Ancestors.  

What We’re Looking For: 

We Are Seeking Participants Who:

  • Are Aged Under 30 Or Over 50 – (If You Don’t Fit Into These Categories But You Really Want To Be Involved – Please Email Us!)
  • Are Interested In Exploring Costume-Making, Queer History, And The Intersections Of Water And Migration. 
  • Are Excited To Work Collaboratively In An Inclusive, Decolonial, And Welcoming Space. 

No Prior Costume-Making Experience Is Needed, Although Experience In Creative Expression Is Welcome.

 

Heads Bodies Legs Work Engages With The Queer Experience Through The Intersections Of Overlapping Identities: Class, Race, Gender, Sexuality And Disability. Embracing The Sense Of ‘Otherness’ That Often Characterises Queer Lives, The Project Will Be Shaped By Who Is In The Room And The Stories They Bring. 

 

Project Details:

  • Workshops: (Approximately) 14 Costume-Making Sessions (1 Session Per Week) From 9th November 2024 To April 2025, Held On Fridays And/Or Saturdays.
  • Free To Attend. Please Indicate Your Availability In Your Application.
  • All Materials Provided, Including Access To Silk Screen Printing .
  • Location:The Project Will Open At The National Maritime Museum, Where The First 4 Workshops Will Take Place. From January To March/ April All Practical Workshops Will Be Held On Fridays At Somerset House.
  • Final Exhibition & Performance: Participants Will Showcase Their Costumes In A Public Performance And/ Or Exhibition, Connecting Their Creations To London’s Rivers, Currents And Queer Heritage.

 

To Apply: Please Send A Short Statement (Max 300 Words) Introducing Yourself And Explaining Your Interest In The Project. If You Have Relevant Experience, Feel Free To Share It. We Are Committed To Accessibility And Encourage Applications From Participants From All Backgrounds, Particularly Those Who Have Faced Barriers In Their Creative Practice.
